On Sunday February 26, 2017, the 89th Academy Awards took place in Dolby Theatre Los Angeles, California. It was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. Near the end of the show, Casey Affleck won the Oscar for Best Actor. This triggered a controversy on whether Affleck deserved an oscar because of his past of sexual harassment allegations in 2010. During that year, Affleck was sued by two co-workers. Amanda White sued for $2 million, she described that there was unwanted sexual advances, discussed sexual exploits, told women they were cows, attempted to manipulate, and violently grabbing her. Magdalena Gorka sued for $2.25 million. She described that Affleck snuck in her bed at night, his face close to hers, and did not know how long he was there. Affleck denied these allegations and these lawsuits were later on settled outside of court. When Affleck won the Oscar many individuals turned their anger towards twitter on his win.
They also compared Affleck to President Trump and his sexual misconduct.
They even had Brie Larson a person who supported survivors of sexual assault for years to announce his win. She refused to applaud for him and many were pleased that she did so. Larson did win an Oscar in 2016 when she played a rape survivor in Room.
The oscars were not the only time Larson had to give Affleck an award, even during the Golden Globe Awards she had to announce him as the winner for the Best Actor. Since this has occurred twice, individuals do believe that misogyny does exist.
Not only was there talk about Brie Larson, there was also talk about Nate Parker. Nate Parker also has a history of sexual violence. He was charged with rape but was acquitted of all charges by the jury. Because of his history Nate was unable to win an Oscar. The only difference between him and Affleck was the colour of their skin.
